THIS MONTH I HD THE PRIVILGE OF MEETING THE DADDY OF VOCAL PRODUCTION IN SOUTH-EAST LONDON, HIS TALENTS ARE UTILISED BY SOME OF THE HOTTEST NAMES IN MUSIC RIGHT NOW,..... MR DANNY.C..... FOUNDER OF A.I.M RECORDS....
DANNY, WHATS YOUR FIRST MUSICAL MEMORY? " listening to an album called black gold, it was a motown compilation, it was my dads actually, there was a track on there called 'patches', about a kid growing up through hardship in deep south america, and havin nuff struggles in his life, i used to play it over and over. my first making music memory was one my dad told me about, i used to make my sister play the music for the songs i wrote, but one day she wouldnt get on the keyboard, so i had to do it myself, i was only 8! the song was called 'dracula'
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND HOW OLD WERE YOU? "it was 'celebration' by cool and the gang,my mum used to take me and my sister shopping for records every sunday, i wanted to buy 'ant music' by adam and the ants, but my mum wouldn't let me. i went back for it the week after though!"
YOU WERE IN A FEW BANDS WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP, WHAT WAS THE FIRST ONE CALLED? "badboys!! i was 11 or 12, i was lead singer! we played on school radio, thats when i signed my first autograph, it all went wrong though, i was asked to leave my own band!! my ego got in the way, they thought i wasnt taking it seriously enough, i just wanted to be a popstar! i went on to be in 4 or 5 other bands...'alive in mind' when i was 17, making indie rock,(see bottom of page for picture) and 'whyte' at age 21,when we made indie type stuff like stone roses/happy mondays,(see bottom of page for pic).Whyte played at nuff venues such as bagleys, hippodrome and maximus, we toured the acid house circuit."
WHERE DID YOU PLAY YOUR FIRST GIG? "it was with my first serious band,i was 17 and we had won a competition, we were nominated by our rehearsal studios, the gig was in a youth center on tha ayelsbury estate, we were called 'alive in mind', halfway through the gig the drumkit fell apart! followed by the stage...proper nightmare! but from winning that comp we got the funds to do a video demo, the track was called 'bedroom'."
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC WERE YOU MAKING THEN? "U2/simple minds typr stuff, i wanted to be bono/the edge!"
SO WHAT MADE YOU GO ON TO BE A PRODUCER/DJ? "politics and egos, i got into dj-ing after i became a producer"
WHO HAS INFLUENCED YOU OVER THE YEARS? "nobody, i progressed on my own, all my pals were into footy and stuff, i got a lot of stick for being different, music is more accepted now with the council estate/working class, back in the day it cost bare dough to make and produce beats".
WHAT PRODUCERS/ARTISTS DO YOU RESPECT/ADMIRE? "jaimeson,(the first person i could relate to), viper, mj.cole, and wookie (to name just a few),but i respect hardwork and tanacity, even if im not into the artist/producers style i respect the perseverance and admire it."
VOCAL PRODUCTION IS YOUR NICHE, WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS? "this is a deep one, i see vocals as pictures, i dont hear them, i see them, i dont rely on my ears, i rely on the hairs on the back of my neck"
YOUR PRODUCTION EXPERTISE HAS BEEN UTILISED BY SOME BIG NAMES SUCH AS JAIMESON,SUGAR BABES, NIKKI.S AND NYKE, WHILEY AND DOGZILLA, WHO HAVE YOU ENJOYED WORKING WITH MOST AND WHY? "the guitar based project i did with viper was most fulfilling, but nikki.s and nyke were the most fun(bare joke!) and jaimesons album was the most learning"
OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS YOU HAVE RELEASED A FEW TRACKS OF YOUR OWN...WHAT GOES AROUND, DEVOTION, MAGIC AND FOLLOW ME, SHARE THE MOMENT AND HEARTACHE....SO WHATS NEXT? "well we have an exclusive new track by myself and jay harvey called "going crazy", coming to a radio near you in the next couple months, so listen out for that, plus a wicked 4tracke ep by lickrish music, with and exclusive aim mix by myself called "over with you".
"FOLLOW ME IS A MASSIVE CLUB CLASSIC, WHAT MADE YOU REMIX IT? "dj hux suggested doing a faster mix, the original was 120bpm,and impossible to mix into a garage set, so we made it 135bpm, it was done in a day, the backline came first, then a fellow producer called lynx suggested using oggie for the vocal, the rest is history"
YOU HAD A COUPLE OF TRACKS SIGNED TO THE INFAMOUS 'LOCKED ON' LABEL, ROAR BEATS IS A PERSONAL FAVE OF MINE, BUT THEY ARE GRIMEY COMPARED TO A LOT OF YOUR OTHER TRACKS, WHAT MADE YOU CHANGE YOUR SOUND AT THAT POINT? " it was an experiment that went right, the ukg sound was changing, i tried a ting and it worked!"
WOULD YOU MAKE GRIME AGAIN? "yep,im currently working on a project with mc viper, aka, v-man".
WHERE CAN OUR READERS BUT THE BACK CATALOGUE OF YOUR TRACKS? "the aim shop on the aim records site.... www.aimrecords.biz "
WHO ARE YOU WORKING WITH AT THE MO? "its easier to say who im not working with (ya get mee!)
IF THERE WAS ONE TRACK OUT THERE YOU WISH YOU HAD MADE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? "alison lymerick- where love lives or a U2 track like 'with or without you' or 'running to stand still'."
HOW OLD ARE YOU WHEN YOU STARTED PLAYING GUITAR? " 8or9,i had a lesson booked at school with ms bullock and when i got there she wasnt there, so i went, i got marked absent and they stopped my lessons, that cost me about 8or9 years, i didnt start playing again until i was 17 and i started 'alive in mind' which is where the name AIM recors came from"
DO YOU PLAY ANY OTHER INSTUMENTS FOR YOUR MUSIC? "i play a few things, drums is my first, i was third best in my school but that was only because the other 2 had drum kits at home, i didnt.i wish i had made piano my first instrument, because every midi based producer uses a keyboard as a primary tool, but guitar seemed the best choice for me, i just wanted to be up the front of the stage and get first pickings of the groupies, the drummers and keyboardists always got sloppy seconds! (that was my teenage mentality!)"
SO IT WOULD BE SAFE TO SAY YOU WERE A BIT OF A HOE?? "of course! i was proper pretty back then, the birds loved me, so yes, i took advantage, who wouldnt?"
WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS IN LIFE? WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE IN 5 OR 10 YEARS? "i would like to be the busiest and most respected producer/engineer in my industry".
YOU WERE ONE OF THE ORIGINAL DJ'S ON UPFRONT FM, AND THEN YOU DID A COUPLE OF YEARS ON FLASHBACK, HOW DID YOU GET INTO DJ-ING? "it was a natural progression from production".
AS A DJ YOU HAVE PLAYED AT SOME MASSIVE VENUES FOR SOME TOP PROMOTERS, WHICH HAVE BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE AND WHY? " twice as nice at abyss in aiyanappa, cos it was ram, and i was playing to a crowd that included some of the biggest names in the industry, i was also resident at twice as nice when they were at The End, WC1,where i hosted a night called the producers party every month in the party room, which was wicked cos i only booked producers. i.e-dj della from industry standard, who was one of the original producers to turn me onto ukg. another good memory is playing at Ministry of Sound for la cosa nostra, and getting my tape put in the tape pack"
SO YOU HAVE PLAYED ABROAD? "yep"
AS A PRODUCER WHATS THE BEST AND WORST PART OF YOUR JOB? "the worst is working with people whos hearts aint in it, the best is working with people whos heart is in it 110%"
IF SOMEBODY CANT SING, DO YOU TELL THEM STRAIGHT? "yes"
HAVE YOU EVER SUNG ON ONE OF YOUR OWN TRACKS? "yes, plus i love a bringing on tracks, (check out whileys new track-eskyboy,)"
DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR BUDDING PRODUCERS? "the rules in music are- there are no rules, just guidelines"
DO YOU GET CALLS FROM WANNABE PRODUCERS ASKING ADVICE? "yep, i get a few emails here and there, and im always willing and honoured to give advice, the likes of me and jaimeson didnt have that kind of access to people with the knowledge and experience, so we had to learn by our own mistakes".
DO PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES BUY YOUR MUSIC OR IS IT JUST A LONDON THING? "america, canada, australia, new zeland, china, japan, prague...shall i carry on?
SO YOU ARE INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN THEN? " yep, when i was in canada i spent all day looking for a record shop, i love travelling, and wherever i go i hunt down the record shops that stock ukg. the record shop in canada knew about my track 'funky shit' but the wierd thing was that they were listening to it on the 'locked on' website as i walked in!- spooky!" "in new zeland i found a shop, the guy used to save up to come to england to buy vinyl, and play sets on the pirat stations, it must have been 1999 when i walked into his shop, i told him i was a producer from london, and when i told him one of my aliases was MISSING IN ACTION, he told me he had 10copies and sold them! he made me feel like i was lying though,i had to show him a picture of me in my M.I.A t-shirt! (M.I.A is A.I.M backwards!)
BIG TINGS FOR 2006!
