PIED PIPER. JUNE 2006
THIS MONTH I GOT TO MEET ONE OF THE BIG BOYS, PIED PIPER IS A RESPECTED LONGSTANDING VETERAN OF THE UK SCENE, AND I GOT TO ASK HIM A FEW QUESTIONS.
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP P?
SOUTH WEST LONDON, I GREW UP IN STOCKWELL AND VAUXHALL, ROUND THERE. AND NOW I LIVE IN SIDCUP.
WHATS YOUR FIRST MUSICAL MEMORY?
THAT’S A HARD ONE, ITS PROBABLY HEARING MY MUM AND DAD BLASTING OUT THE THREE DEGREES OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT,THEY LIKED THEIR MOTOWN.
WHATS THE FIRST RECORD YOU EVER BOUGHT, AND HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU BOUGHT IT?
SEE THAT’S ANOTHER HARD ONE COS I NEVER STARTED BUYING RECORDS UNTIL I STARTED DJ-ING, AND I DIDN’T START TIL LATE BECAUSE I WAS AN MC, BUT THE FIRST RECORD I EVER BOUGHT HAS GOT TO BE A MICHEAL JACKSON ALBUM, OFF THE WALL.
SO HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC THEN? AND WHEN DID YOU START DJ-ING?
ME AND MY BROTHER HAVE BEEN DOING MUSIC FOR YEARS NOW, IM 38 NOW, AND WE BEEN DOING IT SINCE I WAS ABOUT 16, WE WERE IN A RAP GROUP AND WE USED TO TOUR WITH ICE, PUBLIC ENEMY, THE WHOLE LOT.
WHO WERE YOUR INFLUENCES BACK THEN WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG?
LOOKING BACK ON IT NOW, OUR INFLUENCES WERE DEFINITELY SOUL AND R&B, HIP-HOP, BUT THERES NO ONE ARTIST I CAN SAY, I LIKE ANYBODY WHOS GOT TALENT, THERES BEEN SO MANY I COULD BE HERE ALL NIGHT, BUT ITS DEFINITELY HIP HOP AND OLD SOUL.
YOU GET TO WORK WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE EVERY WEEKEND IN THE CLUBS NOW,WHAT DJ’S OR PRODUCERS DO YOU RESPECT OR ADMIRE?
THE MUSIC HAS REALY CHANGED NOW, SO I DON’T GO OUT MUCH ANYMORE BECAUSE NOBODIES REALY DOING ANYTHING DIFFERENT, IT USED TO BE THAT EVERYONE WAS AN INDIVIDUAL, BUT NOW EVERYBODIES DOING THE SAME THING, SO ITS VERY HARD, BUT IF IM PUSHED I WILL HAVE TO SAY EZ FOR THE S**T HE DOES WITH THE MIXER, HES GOT TO BE THE BEST THING THERE IS IN THE GARAGE SCENE AT THE MOMENT, I JUST LIKE DIFFERENT STUFF, I LIKE TO GO OUT AND LISTEN TO SOME HOUSE, OR SOMETHING I HAVENT HEARD, THEY ARE THE ONES I LIKE TO GO LISTEN TO, IF I GO OUT AND LISTEN TO A DJ I KNOW THEY ALWAYS PLAY THE SAME THING, SO I PREFER THE DJ’S WHO GO OUT THERE AND PLAY THE STUFF I DON’T KNOW.I LIKE GAVIN PETERS, SUPA-D AND WIG MAN BUT I RESPECT EVERYBODY AND TREAT EVERYONE THE SAME.
PRODUCERS-ANYONE WHOS DOING THIS NEW FUNKY HOUSE.
WHATS YOUR FAVE VENUE TO GO PLAY AT?
IF YOUR TALKING CLUBS, AMADEUS, I LIKE THE CLUB, BUT I LIKE ANYWHERE REALY, MINISTRY OF SOUND, ANYWHERE.
WHATS YOUR PERSONAL FAVE GENRE OF MUSIC, WHATS IN YOUR CAR RIGHT NOW?
DRUM AND BASS, I LISTEN TO THAT AND FUNKY HOUSE, THE NEW STUFF, LIKE WHAT SUPA-D AND THEM BOYS PLAY.
YOU HAVE DONE YOUR OWN SHARE OF PRODUCTION, WHAT ARE YOU UP TO AT THE MOMENT?
WE GOT A NEW TRACK COMING OUT, MASTERS OF CEREMONY, IT’S A SUMMER TRACK AND ITS ABOUT GIRLS.AND ITS CALLED “STRICTLY FOR THE LADIES”, IVE ALSO GOT SOME FUNKY HOUSE COMING OUT TOO AND ITS CALLED “FOR YOU”.
IF THERE WAS ONE TRACK OUT THERE YOU WISH YOU HAD MADE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
THE BEATLES-SHE LOVES YOU, BUT ONLY FOR THE MONEY!!
HAVE YOU GOT A NORMAL JOB OUTSIDE OF MUSIC?
NO. BEING A DJ IS A FULL TIME JOB IF YOU ARE DOING IT PROPERLY.PLUS THE PRODUCTION TOO, SO IM LUCKY, I DON’T HAVE TIME FOR A JOB.

NO, NOT AT ALL.
IF YOU DO, WILL THEY BE MUSICALLY MINDED LIKE YOURSELF?
NOT AT ALL, I GOT NEICES AND I THINK ONE OF THEM IS GOING TO BE DOING SOMETHING, COS THEY LOVE THEIR MUSIC AND THEY SHOW AN INTEREST IN IT, BUT IF I HAD A KID I WOULD LET THEM BE WHAT THEY WANT. ITS`UP TO THEM.
HAVE YOU GOT ANY AMBITIONS OUTSIDE MUSIC, WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE IN 5YEARS, DO YOU STILL WANT TO BE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
I LIKE MY JOB, I LIKE WHAT IM DOING, AND IF YOU CAN EARN MONEY FROM SOMETHING YOU LOVE THEN YOUR SORTED, I KNOW DJ’S OUT THERE IN THERE 40’S AND 50’S, SO I WILL CARRY ON AS LONG AS PEOPLE WANT TO LISTEN TO ME, MY EARS ARE GOING THOUGH, I GOT TO WEAR`EARPLUGS NOW, ONE OF MY PALS HAVE STOPPED COS HIS EARS HURT HIM, A LOT OF THE DRUM AND BASS BOYS HAVE GOT EAR PROBLEMS, BUT LIFES A LONG ROAD AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHATS GONA POP UP, I ALWAYS KEEP MY OPTIONS OPEN.

LAST MONTH I GOT TO MEET ANOTHER OF THE SCENES LONGEST SERVING MEMBERS, HE HAS BEEN KNOWN UNDER THE ALIAS OF ZION.H AND DJ LION, HE GREW UP AROUND PECKHAM AND STOCKWELL, AND NOW RESIDES IN BERMONDSEY. 32 YR OLD GOLDEN CHILD IS THE FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF CHOCOLATE FACTORY RECORDINGS, AND HE, LIKE US, IS TRYING TO STEER THE GARAGE SCENE BACK TO ITS OLD SELF..........GOLDEN CHILD..
WHERE DOES THE NAME GOLDEN CHILD COME FROM?" well, me and sum mates were a bit drunk early one morning, and they come up with it cos i always look good, proper, i keep myself lookin smart".
HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC? "my older cousin was doing raindance, and once i heard a tape of the acid they were playing. i fell in love with it. they were the good old days, you cant get them back. i started going to barn raves and it went from there."
WHAT DID YOU DO AFTER THAT? "i followed the scene to hardcore, jungle and drum and bass, and finally to garage."
YOU HAVE BEEN ON NUFF STATIONS, WHICH CAME FIRST? "influence fm, i used to go to lazerdrome back then, and we started the station in '91, then i went onto freak fm, and then onto lightning fm, i was playing a lot of d&b, then we switched to garage, after that we set up taste fm, that was with smokey, the first broadcast went out from my mates bedroom! it did well but flopped when peoples egos got in the way. i then went on upfront fm, and by then the scene had gone grimey so i started playing house, i had been secretlt buying it."
WHY SECRETLY? "cos i was buying garage then, i was only buying the house for listening at home."
SO WHAT DID YOU DO AFTER UPFRONT? "i was on unknown fm for about a year, and basically got fed up cos it got too dark, just like the d&b scene did.i was pals with goldie, and back then we used to go metalheads every sunday, that was always good, maybe if i had stuck to the d&b i would have made a name for myself, but i got fed up and lost the drive for it cos it was getting too dark."
SO WHEN DID YOU START SERIOUSLY PRODUCING? "when i left flashback fm, i did my first track with andy b, we did a remix for a boyband for bmg, but they didnt wana pay us, so it flopped!!"
WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES/WHO GIVES YOU INSPIRATION? "de la soul, run dmc, pm dawn and all them oldskool boys, but it wasnt til i started raving that i wanted to make music".

WHAT DJ'S/PRODUCERS DO YOU HOLD IN HIGH REGARD, WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO? "ive got a lot of love and respect for mike and phil delinquant, they have helped me a lot. in the garage scene i got respect for wookie, mj.cole, and danny.c."
REALY WHY DANNY.C? "he does good stuff, hes very soulfull, but hes long!! were all just trying to move the scene forward, i think in a years time the scene will look a lot healthier, in the hip hop world it can only be dr dre or timberland, their sound is so clean, i want my production to go that way."

HAVE YOU EVER ABUSED YOUR POSITION AS A DJ TO GET DOWN WITH THE LADIES? "if its offered to me on a plate and im single then yeah! i wouldnt say no, but i dont use "im a producer" as a chat up line!".
WHATS THE BEST AND WORSE PARTS OF YOUR JOB? "the worst part has to be sampling, its so tedius, doing the same thing over and over til it sounds right, the best part is the finished product, hearing it played and seeing people dance to it, it feels good."
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW? "im busy at mo, got stuff going on with colourgirl, i just did a track with j.harvey, a singer thats doing well."
I REALY LIKE YOUR TRACK 'ALL OF ME' "yeah thats with simone, shes good, we just finished her r&b album, mj.cole wanted to sign the track to prolific, but hes too long so im putting it out myself."

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT CHOC FACTORY RECS? "its mine! i founded it, im the boss! i work mostly alone unless i need a singer or sumthin."
IS IT GOING WELL? "yeah, its doing alright, its a struggle, you got to have your heart in it, nowadays it aint about the money, its about trying to get the garage scene back to where it was, nowadays selling 500 units is good, but not in comparison to 7000 units back in the day."
